LOGAN — Due to continued snowfall, officials are intermittently closing a section of Logan Canyon, US-89, Tuesday afternoon. The closures are expected to begin at 3 p.m. and could last for several hours.
“The canyon will be closed for avalanche mitigation work,” said UDOT Senior Communication Manager Mitch Shaw. “Because of the risk of slides, we need to do it right now for safety.”
Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Cade Brenchley said troopers will be placed at the mouth of the canyon on both the Cache and Rich county sides. They will be turning away all through traffic during the mitigation work.
The avalanche crews will focusing on two areas, the Dugway and Beaver Point. Motorists who are headed to parts of the canyon before the impacted areas will still be allowed past the road blocks.
The closure is expected to impact skiers and boarders at Beaver Mountain. With the highway closed for several hours, motorists would have to detour through Emigration Canyon in order drive back into Cache Valley.
Shaw said it was possible that skiers and boarders may have to wait at the resort for the mitigation work to finish.
A spokesperson for Beaver Mountain said they had just been notified of the closure and were attempting to let everyone on the mountain know.
Shaw said because it’s a pretty fluid operation, they aren’t exactly sure the scope of the closure or when the canyon will reopen completely. The work will likely take at least a couple of hours.
“It is annoying to have to close the road and we don’t take it lightly,” said Shaw.
