SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Logan cancer treatment clinic has been fined $175,000 for using prescription drugs not approved for commercial distribution in the United States.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Dustin Pead on Tuesday also slapped the Cache Valley Cancer Treatment and Research Clinic with a forfeiture money judgment of $775,000 and placed it on probation for six months.
The facility was sentenced after pleading guilty to receipt of misbranded drugs and delivery for sale. The clinic is owned by Dr. Ali Ben-Jacob, a Utah oncologist.
According to court documents, the clinic received “misbranded” cancer drugs from a Canadian company from about 2009 to 2011.
The drugs weren’t listed with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as being made for commercial distribution in the U.S.
No patient harm from use of the drugs was reported.
