CACHE COUNTY – Another candidate has tossed his hat into the ring to compete to replace former Cache County Attorney K. Taylor Sorensen.

Promising to “lead with honesty,” local lawyer J. Brett Chambers has announced his intent to seek the post of interim county attorney in competition with Dane Murray, a current member of the staff of the County Attorney’s Office.

Chambers is a member of the local law firm of Harris, Preston & Chambers, LLC; a former president of the Cache County Bar Association; and a commissioner of the Utah State Bar.

Chambers said that he was approached by members of the local legal community who encouraged him to run for the county office after Sorensen announced his resignation in January.

His announcement was accompanied by a letter of endorsement signed by more than 30 local lawyers, including well-known members of the legal community like former State Senator Lyle Hillyard, Democrat Herm Olsen and former county attorney Tony Baird.

“After years of turnover,” their letter of endorsement reads, “the Cache County Attorney’s Office needs steady, committed leadership.

“J. Brett Chambers has deep roots in this community, has earned the respect of this peers and has the experience, leadership and judgment to guide this office for the long term.”

In the wake of Sorensen’s resignation, which was effective Feb. 8, the members of Cache County Council are expected to name a temporary acting county attorney to handle the routine work of that office at their regular meeting on Feb. 10.

Traditionally, that temporary appointment will to go to some current member of the Cache County Attorney’s office staff.

On Saturday, Mar. 7, the Cache County Republicans will meet at Sky View High School in Smithfield to review Chambers, Murray and any other candidates who might join the race.

They will select up to three candidates whose names will be forwarded to the Cache County Council to assume the role of interim county attorney for the remainder of Sorensen’s unexpired term of office until the end of 2026.

The County Council will then appoint one of those recommended candidates as interim county attorney.

Finally, Cache County voters will pick a permanent county attorney during the midterm election balloting in November.

During the filing period for candidates in the upcoming 2026 election that closed Jan. 8, local attorneys Chambers and Chris Danes joined Murray in signaling their intent to replace Sorensen as permanent county attorney.

Additional candidates seeking to serve as interim county attorney are advised to indicate their interest in that post by sending an e-mail to County Republican Chair Natalie Levi at chaircachegop@gmail.com
