LOGAN — Former Utah State University basketball center Jarred Shaw is off probation after serving six months of his three year sentence for marijuana possession.

Shaw’s defense attorney, Shannon Demler, was in 1st District Court Monday asking the judge to terminate his client’s probation so that he could continue pursuing a basketball career.

Demler said Shaw is at home in Texas and hoping to sign a basketball contract with a professional team overseas. Because of his probation though, he had been unable to travel outside the country.

State attorney Spencer Walsh argued that Shaw hadn’t served enough time on probation and said he shouldn’t be released until serving at least a year.

Judge Kevin Allen said considering the evidence that Shaw is a low risk offender, he felt it was appropriate to terminate the probation as successful.

In June, Judge Allen denied a similar request to reduce Shaw’s charge from a third-degree felony to a class C misdemeanor.

Shaw was originally sentenced in March to serve 10 days in the Cache County Jail and 36 months probation after pleading guilty to a drug possession charge in January. He was allowed to complete his jail sentence, serving time on weekends so he could complete his degree at Utah State.
