LOGAN – It’s municipal election season for the city of Logan and other communities throughout Cache Valley.

The City of Logan will hold its municipal election this fall to elect three council members. The at-large seats up for grabs are currently held by incumbent city council members Mark A. Anderson, Tom Jensen and Jeannie Simmonds.

Since the candidacy window opened on June 1, Anderson and Simmonds have filed for re-election.

Others who have declared their candidacy so far include city residents Joe Needham, Joshua M. Molitor, Erin Bennett and Mike Johnson.

The window for candidate fillings in Logan will close a 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7. Successful candidates will serve four-year terms beginning Jan. 2, 2024.

The number of candidates in Logan will likely be winnowed down during a primary election slated for Tuesday, Aug. 15.

The municipal general election date will be Tuesday, Nov. 7.

During a visit to KVNU’s for the People program on May 17, City Recorder Teresa Harris said that Logan and Cache County will be cooperating to manage the upcoming primary and general elections.

“We have contracted with the county government … as have other cities (and towns) in (Cache) county,” she explained. “They will be sending out the ballots, which will be going back to the county for processing.

But Harris added that her office will still oversee the candidate filings, the issuing of notices and financial reporting for the elections.

The qualifications for candidates seeking office in Logan are that the would-be candidate must be at least 18-years-old; not a convicted felon; be a U.S. citizen; be a registered voter; and a resident of Logan for at least 365 days prior to the date of the general election (Nov. 7).

According to the Logan’s candidate guide, there are other important deadlines for prospective candidates. By July 3, for example, candidates must submit a 200-word biographical statement to the Utah website for the primary election and voter information pamphlet.

Seven days prior to the primary election (Aug. 8), all candidates must submit an initial Campaign Finance Report detailing all contributions received between Jan. 1, 2023 and Aug. 3, 2023.

The names of candidate who failing to meet the campaign finance reporting deadline will be removed from the ballot.

Persons interested in becoming a candidate for office in Logan must file a Declaration of Candidacy in person with the Logan City Recorder, 290 North 100 West, Logan, Utah, during regular office hours and not later than 5:00 p.m. on June 7, 2023.

The filing forms are available at the City Recorder’s Office. There is no filing fee.
