A total of 22 incumbents and hopeful candidates have filed to run for 10 elective posts at Cache County level in the upcoming 2024 election.
CACHE COUNTY – Hopeful candidates came out of the woodwork at the last minute to file in 2024 local political races on Monday, Jan. 8.
On the last day of filing, seven new candidates joined the 16 who had already filed for county posts, leaving only County Recorder Tennille Johnson, County Assessor Brett Robinson and County Treasurer Craig McAllister running unopposed for re-election.
The race for county attorney will be between incumbent K. Taylor Sorensen and Cameron Cox, a local lawyer in private practice.
Four candidates are now running for the open seat of Cache County auditor, which the Council Council recently voted to split from the county clerk’s office.
They are Dianna Schaeffer, the current county tax administrator; Brittany Kingston, the county’s budget analyst; Dirk Anderson, the chief deputy to County Executive David Zook; and Matthew C. Funk, who now serves as judge in the Richmond Justice Court.
The race for the post of county clerk will be a four-way contest between Bryson J. Behm (the county’s former chief deputy clerk) and newcomers David Palmer, Roger T. Anderson and Sebastian M. Luu.
Incumbent clerk David Benson, who on administrative leave pending the completion of an investigation into election irregularities in 2023, did not file for re-election.
In the race for Logan Seat 1 on the Cache County Council, long-term incumbent Karl Ward will face Keegan Garrity, a persistent critic of the Logan City Council who has now shifted his attention to the county government.
Competing for Logan Seat 2 on the Cache County Council will be incumbent Barbara Y. Tidwell and Allison Goulais, the only Democrat who has filed to run for any of the county posts.
In the council’s North District, incumbent county council chair David Erickson will face Jon-David Jorgensen.
In the council’s South District, incumbent Nolan P. Gunnell will face Devron Anderson, the former recorder for Cache County.
Although the official filing period for Cache County posts is now closed, additional candidates can still file as write-in candidates with the Cache County Clerk’s office at any time between now and Sept. 1, 2024.
The names of write-in candidates will not appear on the county ballot, however.
