LOGAN — The identity of a 58-year-old woman, killed in an auto-pedestrian accident Monday night, has been released. Shelley Compton was jogging near 750 E. 1400 North in Logan, after being fatally struck by a pickup truck, just after 5:30 p.m.
Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Cade Brenchley said Compton was jogging westbound on 1400 North, across from the street from the Oakridge apartment complex. Preliminary evidence suggests she began to cross the road near 750 E. and had made it to the median when she continued into the path of an eastbound pickup truck.
The driver of the Dodge Dakota pickup had just passed a semi-truck on the left and switched into the right lane. Shortly after, Compton reportedly walked in front of the truck, resulting in the collusion.
The driver of the truck said he never saw the jogger until she struck the front of his vehicle. He remained on the scene, fully cooperating with investigators.
Compton suffered critical injuries and was not moving after the crash. She was transported by ambulance to Logan Regional Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Brenchley said several people witnessed the accident. The semi-truck was also equipped with a dash-camera that may have video of the crash. Troopers have contacted the trucking company to obtain a copy of it.
Troopers report there was no sign of impairment or distraction on the part of the driver. There is no crosswalk on that part of the street.
Brenchley said the end of Daylight Savings Time might have been a factor in the accident. The sun had already set and it was dark at the time of the crash.
Compton was reportedly wearing darker clothes, which may have been difficult to see. She was also wearing earbuds and might not have realized how close oncoming traffic was.
Logan City Police officers were originally called to the accident. They requested the Utah Highway Patrol conduct the investigation after it was realized that Compton’s husband is an employee of Logan City.
Friends and acquaintances shared their sorrow on social media about Compton’s passing. They described her as being Christ-like, and a positive and uplifting person to be around.
