LOGAN — A 41-year-old Hyrum woman has pleaded guilty to stealing around $30,000 from a family member’s home in 2020. Amanda Lescoe accepted a plea deal, agreeing to pay back the money to avoid a lengthy jail or prison sentence.
Lescoe participated in a Change of Plea Hearing Monday afternoon in 1st District Court. She pleaded guilty to theft, a second-degree felony.
Lescoe was arrested in July 2021 after the Cache County Sheriff’s Office received a report of the home burglary from the victim. The woman explained how the defendant would enter her Nibley home while she was gone and take large sums of money from a safe. The crimes took place in March 2020.
The victim told investigators, the safe had approximately $40,000. She later noticed that nearly all of the money was gone, with the exception of approximately $4,000.
The woman described how when she confronted Lescoe about the theft. The defendant reportedly admitted to entering the home 4-6 times for the purpose of taking money from the safe.
Investigators later questioned Lescoe. She claimed that she was coerced by her family to admit to the thefts. However, she would not specify what manner they had pressured her.
The case was scheduled a two day jury trial to begin February 15.
As part of the plea deal, Lescoe agreed to pay back $30,000 to the victim. Prosecutors also dismissed four remaining charges of burglary and will recommend only 20 days in jail, to be served on weekends.
According to court records, Lescoe was convicted of similar charges in February 2019. She later accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to an amended charge of burglary. She was sentenced to serve 10days in jail and three-years probation.
Lescoe remains out of jail on bail and is schedule to be sentenced April 3.
