LOGAN — A 67-year-old Hyrum man has been sentenced to one month in jail and four years of probation for molesting a young girl multiple times. Carlos Whitney Kartchner was booked Friday into the Cache County Jail to begin serving his sentence.

According to court records, Kartchner appeared March 11 in Logan’s 1st District Court. He previously accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony.

Last May, Cache County Sheriff’s deputies received a sex abuse report at a Hyrum residence. The victim explained how Kartchner, a family acquaintance, had inappropriately touched her on multiple occasions since 2022.

The woman described being groped and molested when she was a teenager. The incidents occurred while she was visiting the defendant’s family.

The victim later confronted Kartchner through text messages. He reportedly admitted to the criminal behavior and wrote a letter of apology. The messages and letter were later given to deputies

Four months later, the victim participated in a recorded telephone call with Kartchner. After confronting him about the incidents, the Hyrum man reportedly admitted to the illegal actions, repeatedly saying he was sorry.

Deputies arrested Kartchner on September 5 at his place of employment. After being read his rights, he reportedly asked for an attorney and would not answer any questions.

During last week’s sentencing hearing, Judge Brian Cannell sentenced Kartchner to 30 days in jail and 48 months of probation. He also ordered the Hyrum man to pay a $1053 fine, undergo therapy, and have no contact with the victim.
