LOGAN — An 18-year-old Hyrum man has been arrested and charged with allegedly downloading child pornography. Justin A. Echevarria was booked Friday into the Cache County Jail.

According to an arrest report, Cache County Sheriff’s deputies obtained a search warrant for Echevarria’s cell phone after receiving a report that he might be using it to access pornographic videos and pictures of young children. He reportedly wouldn’t cooperate with law enforcement and refused to provide information to unlock the phone.

Deputies sent the device to a forensic lab, where investigators were able to access the contents. They found a large amount of pornography, including several videos and photos of children between 3 and 10-years-old.

Echevarria was arraigned during a virtual hearing in 1st District Court Monday afternoon, appearing by video from jail. He was charged with three counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony.

Judge Angela Fonnesbeck assigned Echevarria a public defender and set bail at $3,000. She ordered the suspect to forfeit his passport and have no access to the internet while on pretrial release.

Echevarria didn’t speak about the charges. He could face up to 15 years in prison, if convicted.

Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
