LOGAN – The Cache Valley Humanitarian Center (CVHC) is inviting the community to an open house on Thursday, August 1 from 4 to 7 p.m. They are located at 595 South Riverwood Parkway, Suite 130.
The organization welcomes area residents, summer citizens, businesses and government leaders to see how the CVHS has impacted Cache Valley in the three years since the Center began.
Dwight and Kay Whittaker, directors of the CVHC, want to show the public what a difference they are making in Cache Valley.
“When the Hyrum Humanitarian Center closed, we picked up more volunteers,” Dwight said. “We also are making quilts and newborn kits.”
He said they probably could have gotten by with a 3,000 square foot building but with the two extra quilting frames and seven sewing machines and cutting tables he thinks they are looking for a 5,000 square foot location.
“The conference center we are at now is a great location,” Dwight said. “We are getting more donations and volunteers; our space is filling up fast.”
The center was established in 2021 with the help of Cache Valley Morning and Logan Rotary clubs. The charity organization is using a temporary place until another one can be found.
“We are so happy the people from Hyrum have joined us. We have up to eight people who regularly participate with us,” Kay said. “We do 30 newborn kits with 38 crib quilts a month. We are in need of good clean fabric if anyone has any to donate.”
After seeing the positive things that were happening at the Idaho humanitarian center they were volunteering at, they decided to bring their expertise to Cache Valley.
In the time they have been operating the center they have found 40 non-profit organizations to work with and area schools to provide nearly 10,000 individuals with a variety of needed items: back-to-school kits, hygiene kits, sleeping mats, coats, quilts, and books. Volunteers have donated 24,000 hours of their time.
At the open house on August 1, refreshments will be served, and members of the Utah State University football, basketball, soccer, and volleyball teams will be demonstrating how they make their products.
