LOGAN — Crews are investigating after a fire caused substantial damage to a residence early Thursday morning and displaced the home’s nine occupants.

The fire was reported at 3:56 a.m. near 64 West 600 North.

Logan City Fire Marshal Craig Humphreys said the fire department found heavy smoke and flames coming from a basement window of the home.

“The fire department was able to make entry, with hand-lines, into the basement and extinguish the fire,” said Humphreys.

There were nine occupants inside the home at the time of the fire. They were all able to evacuate safely before crews arrived on the scene.

The occupants reportedly told crews the fire may have started from a candle, burning inside a basement bedroom. Humphreys said most of the fire’s damage was contained to the basement but the exact cause is still under investigation.

“There is one room in the basement that was damaged heavily by fire. The other two had a lot of heat and smoke damage. There is also smoke damage throughout the rest of the home. I would put a damage estimation between $50,000 to $70,000 dollars.”

The nine occupants included several teenagers and younger children. The American Red Cross is assisting.
