LOGAN — A 23-year-old Henefer man faces multiple felony charges in Cache County after allegedly using movie prop money printed with the phrase “In Props We Trust” to purchase a motorcycle last summer, according to court records.
Adriano Roger Mascarenas was charged Oct. 22 in Logan’s 1st District Court with second-degree felony theft by deception of $5,000 or more and third-degree felony forgery.
The charges stem from an incident on July 5, 2025, when a seller agreed to sell his 2013 Kawasaki ZX-6R motorcycle for $5,300 on Facebook Marketplace. According to a probable cause statement, the victim negotiated the sale with a user operating under the profile name “Dani Gonzalez”.
The two met later that evening in the parking lot of the Walmart in south Logan. During the encounter, the buyer handed over what appeared to be a stack of legitimate $100 bills. Believing he had received full payment, the seller signed over the motorcycle’s title, and the buyer rode away on the Kawasaki.
The victim discovered the deception the following day upon inspecting the cash more closely. Investigators wrote that all of the bills were counterfeit prop money prominently stamped with the phrase “In Props We Trust”. When the seller attempted to reach out, the buyer avoided arranging a return of the vehicle, and the motorcycle has not been recovered.
Evidence gathered by the Logan City Police Department directly connected the deceptive account to Mascarenas. Search warrant returns from Facebook and Google revealed that the “Dani Gonzalez” profile was active on the exact same mobile device as Mascarenas’ personal Facebook account.
In addition, the Gmail address associated with the fictitious profile was tied to a single device named “Adriano’s iPhone”. Digital records showed that both accounts repeatedly accessed the internet through IP addresses assigned to Mascarenas’ residence on East Henefer Road in Henefer.
Prosecutors noted that Mascarenas faces similar legal troubles elsewhere in the state. He is also charged in Salt Lake County with theft and forgery in connection with a nearly identical scheme, in which a buyer using the “Dani Gonzalez” moniker paid a seller with prop $100 bills.
Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
