SALT LAKE CITY – Gov. Spencer Cox has called the Utah Legislature into its first special session of 2025.
That gathering, slated for 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, will address a laundry list of state and local concerns, including some that may impact Cache County.
The big item on that agenda will be adopting new congressional district boundary maps ordered in August by the Third District Court to be delivered by November. A month later, the Utah Supreme Court refused to grant a stay of that order, letting the November deadline stand.
In a last gasp effort to deter redistricting, however, the Special Session will also “determine the best available data” as well as “scientific and statistical methods to use in evaluating redistricting plans.”
Also on the agenda are possible modifications to House Bill 356 (County Governance Amendments) enacted by the 2025 General Session of the Legislature.
Based on the original text of H.B. 356, the Cache County Council organized a Form of Government Study Committee here that has been meeting since June to consider whether a change of government is needed in Cache County.
At their Special Session, lawmakers will consider amending that law to specify “when a council member in certain counties must represent a single district and other related provisions.”
Lawmakers will also consider amendments to Senate Bill 67 (Local Option Sales Tax Amendments) to “…adjust local option sales and use taxes available for qualifying political subdivisions to fund emergency services in certain counties.”
Of statewide importance, the Legislature will also consider changes to the process of selecting as well as the term of office for the post of chief justice of the Utah Supreme Court.
Other matters on the agenda for the Oct. 6 session include amendments to House Bill 263 (Election Records Amendments); House Bill 272 (Vehicle Assessment Amendments); House Bill 337 (Property Manager Requirements); and several changes to the Utah Code.
The Oct. 6 Special Session of the Utah Legislature is expected to be a one-day session.
