Logan landfill on July 28, 2023.
LOGAN — The Logan Outdoor Recreation Complex will be a new park in a well-used but unlikely location, the Logan Landfill site south of SR-30.
On KVNU’s monthly Speak to the Mayor program last week, Logan mayor Holly Daines talked about the proposal.
“There is a big area around the landfill that’s required is called the Landfill Protection Zone. Once the landfill closes, which it’s in the process of closing now, you can see we’ve already covered part of it, you can use it for some things. You can’t build houses or buildings on it, but, of course turning it into recreation space is perfect. It’s almost 200 acres too, if you count all the land out there,” she said.
The mayor said there has been so much growth on the southwest side (with more on the way), so, they are really excited to turn that area into a park. Daines said it will be developed in phases because of cost.
“We did just apply for a ‘UOR’ grant, Utah Outdoor Recreation grant, and this is one of their big grants, it was for $750,000 dollars, which the city has to match. So, we did something different with our RAPZ funding this year. Usually we apply for multiple smaller projects, but we kind of put all our eggs in one basket and said, if we’re going to make this go forward, we need some money that we can use to match this grant.”
She said they were able to get about $475-thousand dollars from RAPZ to go towards the recreation complex.
Daines said, too, there are different recreation needs that will be developed.
For example, the trash hill will be turned into a mountain bike park which would be bigger than the one at the city’s Bridger Park.
That project would probably take place during the second phase of the development.
