LOGAN — A former Utah State University basketball player, who was previously convicted on drug charges in Logan, has been arrested in Indonesia for allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs into the country, according to law enforcement.
The Associated Press reported 34-year-old Jarred Shaw was arrested outside of Jakarta May 7.
Shaw played for the Tangerang Hawks of the Indonesian Basketball League.
Officials with the Soekarno-Hatta Airport raided Shaw’s apartment and found 132 cannabis candies after a tip about a suspicious package he received.
Police Chief Ronald Sipayung told the AP that Shaw could face a sentence of life in prison or even the death penalty under Indonesia’s strict anti-drug laws.
Originally from Texas, Shaw played for Utah State from 2012 to 2014.
While an Aggie, Shaw was arrested in December 2013 after police responded to a Logan residence on report of a possible sexual assault.
When police arrived, they determined Shaw and two other individuals had been using drugs at the residence.
Shaw was sentenced to serve 10 days in the Cache County Jail and 36 months of probation after pleading guilty to possession of drugs, a third-degree felony. He was allowed to complete his jail sentence on weekends, so he could complete his degree at Utah State.
In September 2014, a judge terminated Shaw’s probation after six months so that he could reportedly continue pursuing a basketball career overseas.
During his time with the Aggies, he was named the WAC All-Newcomer of the year and Second-Team All-WAC.
