Candidate for Utah House District 2, Val Potter, talks to KVNU For the People host Jason Williams

LOGAN — Utah House District 2 has been located much farther south, in the Lehi area, but thanks to redistricting, what is now District 3 will become District 2 as of 2023.

A candidate for that district that takes in the northern part of Cache County is no stranger to local and state politics.

Val Potter was a guest on KVNU’s For the People program on Monday. He feels his work at the local level has suited him well as he, again, throws his hat in the ring.

“And I think that’s where it helps, to have legislators that have some experience at the local level. I’ve had experience as a mayor and as a county councilman. I think there are a lot of legislators, they come into the position, and they sense that they’re in a fairly powerful position to make big decisions. And they very quickly realize that they can…in my opinion, overstep their bounds and try to dictate what’s going on at the city and the county level,” he said.

Potter said he believes there’s nothing more important than the government closest to the people, such as the mayor and the city council.

When it comes to growth, it is happening, but is different here than along the Wasatch Front.

“We sometimes forget, there’s a lot of agriculture in northern Cache County and sometimes we put our focus on what’s happening in North Logan, Hyde Park and especially Smithfield, being the larger of the three, and they make noise and we listen. But the people in Amalga, Benson and Lewiston and other areas there are very important. They have a huge job, they have a lot of land and decisions made at the Capitol can affect them in a negative way.”

Potter said their voice needs to be heard too. You can learn more about his candidacy at VotePotter.com
