LOGAN — Health officials have confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus in Cache County for the 2026 season, prompting urgent reminders for northern Utah residents to protect themselves against mosquito bites.
The Bear River Health Department announced the infection but declined to release additional information regarding the patient’s identity, age or medical condition to protect privacy.
West Nile virus is transmitted to humans and animals through the bite of an infected mosquito, which typically contracts the virus after feeding on infected birds. Public health data indicates the majority of people infected do not develop symptoms. Those who do become ill generally experience mild, flu-like symptoms including fever, headache, body aches or fatigue. However, in rare instances, the virus can attack the central nervous system, causing severe neurological illness.
Mosquito abatement teams across Box Elder, Cache and Rich counties are actively monitoring local insect populations and testing traps for viral activity. Positive mosquito pool data is updated regularly on the health department’s website. Because mosquitoes can travel several miles from their breeding grounds, officials stress that residents throughout the entire district face potential risk.
To reduce exposure, the health department recommends adhering to the “5 Ds” of mosquito prevention:

Drain: Remove standing water around homes and workplaces where mosquitoes breed.

Dawn and dusk: Limit outdoor activities during these peak mosquito hours.

DEET: Use an EPA-approved insect repellent containing DEET or another approved active ingredient.

Dress: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting long sleeves and long pants when spending time outdoors.

Door: Install and repair screens on windows and doors to keep insects outside.
Health officials advise anyone who develops severe symptoms, such as a high fever, neck stiffness, confusion, disorientation or muscle weakness following a mosquito bite, to seek medical attention promptly.
