RICH COUNTY — Firefighters have made substantial progress containing the Dry Fork Fire, burning southwest of Randolph. The fire has burned more than 1,340 acres, near the Big Creek Road and Big Creek Canyon area.

Thursday, the Utah Bureau of Land Management said the fire saw no new growth and very minimal fire activity. It is now over 40 percent contained.

The fire was discovered Tuesday, Aug. 6, burning in sage, juniper and aspen. It reportedly grew quickly, fanned by wind, and hot and dry conditions.

Thursday firefighters were spread out along the fire perimeter and engaged in mopping up and strengthening containment lines. Due to their progress, state and federal crews were going to be pulled off the fire lines, and local firefighters will finish completing containment.

The fire is suspected to have been caused by lighting. No structures were reportedly damaged but several roads in the area were closed as a precaution.
