LOGAN — Firefighters were called to a house fire early Friday morning. The blaze was reported in Clarkston.

According to the Newton Fire Department the single alarm blaze was located in the chimney of the home.

Firefighters used ladders to climb onto the home’s roof to gain access to the chimney. They were able to extinguish the fire before it had extended to the walls of the residence.

No injuries were reported.

Chimney fires are usually caused by a buildup of creosote, a by-product resulting from the incomplete combustion of wood. It can build up on the sides of chimneys as a liquid and later condenses into a solid.  As it builds up it not only blocks the flue, but can ignite into a fire.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends that chimneys be inspected annually to ensure they are clean, functioning properly, and free of damage.
