LOGAN — Family members have publicly released the identity of the 2-year-old girl who died after officers pulled her from a canal near Ellis Elementary School. The drowning occurred Friday evening.

Logan City Police Captain Shand Nazer said 911 dispatch operators received a report of the missing girl from her home, near 70 N. 400 West. Officers immediately arrived in the neighborhood and began searching the area, including the Benson Canal that runs in front of the residence.

Within a short time, officers located the child in the water, east of the school and two blocks north of the girl’s home. She was ultimately pronounced dead after life-saving measures were performed by police and later paramedics.

Sunday, a verified GoFundMe campaign was launched by family members, identifying the 2-year-old victim as Darla Jean Moore. They described her as being a “spunky and happy little girl.”

The fundraiser page read, “She won everyone’s heart within seconds of them meeting her. She loved her little sister more than anything in the world and everyone she came in contact with, even trying to give strangers a hug and a kiss. She will be missed.”

The campaign invites community members to donate money to help the family with the cost of memorial services. It has already raised more than $4,400.

Police said Sunday that they do not suspect any foul play, but they take any “unattended death” seriously and are still investigating.

Funeral services are still being arranged and have not been released.
