SALT LAKE CITY — Elder Gérald Caussé, a native of France and the former Presiding Bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was called and ordained as the newest member of the Church’s Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of on Thursday.

Elder Caussé, 62, was ordained by President Dallin H. Oaks and the other members of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. The Quorum is the second-highest presiding body in the Church, with its members serving as special witnesses of Christ and overseeing the administrative functions of the global faith.

“I’ve always had a testimony of Jesus Christ,” Elder Caussé said Thursday. “I know Jesus Christ lives. And I know He’s our Savior and Redeemer. What a wonderful thing it is to be a witness of Christ.”

Born in Bordeaux, France, in 1963, Elder Caussé moved to Paris at age 19. He and his wife, Valérie Babin Caussé, are second-generation members of the Church, who married in the Bern Switzerland Temple in 1986 and are the parents of five children. Elder Caussé served in the Presiding Bishopric since 2012 and as a General Authority Seventy from 2008 to 2012.

Throughout his ministry, Elder Caussé has been a prominent voice on caring for others and the importance of the Church’s youth. He praised his children for their sacrifice and “consecrated” spirit in enduring several international moves during his service.

He has actively ministered to the rising generation, reminding young adults that their “unique gifts and life experiences” are essential to fulfilling the Lord’s purposes. He also emphasized the importance of environmental sustainability, stating, “God has entrusted us with stewardship over His creations.”

In his most recent general conference address in April 2025, Elder Caussé underscored the pervasive need for the hope found in Christ. “This message of hope and comfort is for all of us, children of God,” he said. “None of us can escape the challenges and limitations of mortality.”
