SALT LAKE CITY — Elder Clark G. Gilbert has been called as the newest member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Gilbert, 55, was ordained Thursday by President Dallin H. Oaks and other members of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve. The call was formally issued Wednesday.

Previously serving as a General Authority Seventy since April 2021, Gilbert has also held the position of Commissioner of the Church Educational System since August 2021. He brings a background deeply rooted in education and media to the Quorum.

“This is an amazing time to point people to the Savior Jesus Christ,” Gilbert said Thursday from the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. “If people all across the world will look to Him, He will make their lives better, more meaningful, more joyful.”

Born in Oakland, California, and raised in Phoenix, Gilbert holds degrees from Brigham Young University, Stanford University and a doctorate in business administration from Harvard University. He later served on the faculty at Harvard Business School before leaving in 2006 to work in administration at BYU-Idaho.

His career includes tenure as CEO of Deseret Digital Media and president of Deseret News. He served as president of BYU-Idaho from 2015 to 2017 before becoming the inaugural president of BYU-Pathway Worldwide, a global higher-education initiative.

Throughout his career, Gilbert has emphasized the link between spiritual and secular learning.

“They never made me think that education and the gospel were decoupled in any way,” Gilbert said of his parents.

Gilbert and his wife, Christine, were married in the Salt Lake Temple in 1994 and are the parents of eight children.
