LOGAN — A pickup truck driver was critically injured early Thursday after striking a cow on a dark stretch of highway and being hit by a commercial delivery truck moments later, authorities said.
According to emergency radio traffic, the initial crash occurred around 2 a.m. on U.S. Highway 89/91 near 2600 South. The pickup truck struck the animal, killing it and leaving the vehicle disabled in the roadway.
Moments later, a UPS driver collided with the disabled pickup truck. Investigators said poor lighting in the area contributed to the secondary impact.
Emergency responders extricated the pickup driver from the wreckage. He was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
Officers closed the northbound lanes of U.S. 89/91 following the incident to clear debris and investigate.
