BOX ELDER COUNTY — A driver faces felony charges after leading police on a reckless high-speed pursuit Jan. 31 that spanned two counties and required two separate deployments of tire deflation devices.

According to the Mantua Police Department, the incident began near mile marker 7 on U.S. 91 when an officer attempted to pull over a speeding vehicle. Instead of stopping, the driver accelerated to evade the officer, prompting a pursuit that extended into Cache County.

Due to safety concerns, the Mantua officer initially terminated the chase. However, the pursuit resumed after Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) troopers notified the officer that they had successfully deployed spike strips and the suspect was heading back southbound on U.S. 91.

As the suspect approached Brigham City, local officers deployed a second set of spike strips near the 200 South off-ramp. Despite two successful deployments damaging the vehicle’s tires, the driver continued southbound toward 1100 South Main Street, driving recklessly and at high speeds.

“Due to the risk to the public, the officer attempted to terminate the pursuit again,” the Mantua Police Department stated.

Shortly after the second attempt to disengage, a UHP trooper intercepted the suspect vehicle and conducted a high-risk stop near 775 West and 1100 South in Brigham City. The Mantua officer assisted UHP in taking the suspect into custody without further incident.

The driver was booked into the Box Elder County Jail on multiple counts, including a charge of felony evading.
