BOX ELDER COUNTY — Two people were pulled from Mantua Reservoir on Sunday afternoon after falling through thinning ice while fishing.
Officers with the Mantua Police Department responded to the reservoir near 200 North St. at approximately 1:25 p.m. Witnesses reported that a man and a woman were ice fishing with friends when the surface began to crack beneath them, sending both plunging into the water.
Police deployed flotation devices to reach the pair. Authorities credited bystanders for their immediate help during the incident.
“We’d like to thank the citizens who assisted us with the ice rescue. They were the true heroes,” the department said in a press release.
Both individuals were medically evaluated at the scene and released on their own accord.
Following the rescue, officials issued a strong warning regarding warming temperatures and deteriorating ice stability.
“We understand the desire to ice fish is there but it’s not worth the potential of getting injured or possibly worse,” police said.
