After scoring victories in 12 of 15 states holding GOP primaries on Super Tuesday, former president Donald Trump told a cheering crowd at his Mar-a-Lago resort that he’s ready to take on President Joe Biden, who he ridiculed as the worst president in history (Image courtesy of Facebook).
PALM BEACH, FL – Republican voters went to the polls in nearly a third of the country on Mar. 5 and the majority of them voted for Donald Trump.
Results of the GOP Super Tuesday primary voting saw Trump carry 12 of 15 states, with polling results from Utah and Alaska still pending.
Voters in Vermont backed former Gov. Nikki Haley, Trump’s only remaining Republican opponent.
Utah Republicans conducted a presidential preference poll at widely scattered caucuses, but their results were delayed by a chaotic night after digital systems failed at numerous locations.
“They call it Super Tuesday for a reason,” Trump told a cheering crowd of supporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort here.
Although Trump’s delegate haul from the Super Tuesday voting is still being calculated, results from the winner-take-all contests suggest that his standing jumped from 244 delegates going into the Tuesday primaries to 551 by late evening
In the race for the GOP nod, Trump needs to 1,215 delegates out of the total of 2,429. A total of 874 delegates were in contention on Super Tuesday.
Halley started the day with 43 delegates and had picked up 9 more by 10 p.m.
In his victory speech, Trump recounted his own achievements while in office from 2017 to 2021.
He also criticized President Joe Biden as “… the worst president in history,” especially for his inept handling of the illegal immigrant crisis on the southern border and of the stagnant economy.
Trump also sought to mend fences within his own party.
“We want to have unity … in the great Republican party,” he said. “We’re going to have unity and it’s going to happen very quickly.”
Trump won the Republican vote by sizable majorities in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.
He is also expected to carry the states of Alaska and Utah when those states report their polling results.
