SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Thursday that Dieter F. Uchtdorf has been called to serve as the acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
The appointment, effective Jan. 8, follows the Dec. 27 death of President Jeffrey R. Holland. President Dallin H. Oaks set Uchtdorf apart for his new role on Thursday morning.
In the Church’s governing structure, the senior member of the Quorum of the Twelve typically serves as its president. While Henry B. Eyring is the senior member, he is currently serving in the First Presidency. Consequently, Uchtdorf, the next in seniority not serving in the First Presidency, assumes the title of “acting president.”
The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is the second-highest presiding body in the Church. Members serve as special witnesses of Christ and oversee the administrative operations of the global faith.
