LOGAN — Cache County Sheriff’s deputies are seeking information from the public after unauthorized individuals operated heavy construction machinery to cause tens of thousands of dollars in damage in Logan Canyon early Wednesday morning.
According to the Cache County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred during the overnight hours leading into Aug. 19 near the Right Hand Fork area of the canyon.
Investigators reported that individuals gained unauthorized access to heavy construction equipment stationed in the area, including a front loader and an excavator. The perpetrators used the front loader to push two portable traffic control signals down an embankment into the river, causing severe damage to the machinery.
Each custom traffic light unit is equipped with specialized solar panel installations and is valued at more than $30,000, bringing total equipment damages to over $60,000.
Further up the canyon, the individuals also operated an excavator without authorization, using the heavy machinery to knock down a significant number of trees.
Deputies responded to the scene following reports of the destruction and are continuing to investigate the area. Law enforcement officials have not yet released details regarding potential suspects or how access to the equipment was obtained.
The sheriff’s office is asking anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the Right Hand Fork or Logan Canyon areas overnight to come forward.
