CACHE COUNTY – Interim Cache County Attorney Dane Murray is about to join NCIS.
Not on television, but in real life.
After receiving an offer to become a special agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Murray tendered a letter of resignation from his duties as county attorney and chief prosecutor on Dec. 11.
Murray has worked at the Cache County Attorney’s Office since May of 2015. During his time, he has served as a deputy county attorney, chief prosecutor and, since November of 2022, as interim county attorney.
In his letter of resignation, Murray observed that he stepped into the role of county attorney “under less than ideal circumstances” after former county attorney John Luthy accepted an appointment to the state bench.
“I am extremely proud of the improvements made to the County Attorney Office over the past year,” Murray recalled. “With that being said … it became abundantly clear that politics is not the future that my wife and I wanted for our family.”
NCIS is the primary investigative law enforcement agency of the U.S. Department of the Navy. Its primary function is to investigate major criminal activities involving the Navy and Marine Corps, although it also has a broad mandate that includes national security, counter-intelligence, counter-terrorism, cyber-warfare and the protection of U.S. naval assets worldwide.
NCIS special agents are supported by analysts and experts skilled in disciplines such as forensics, surveillance, computer investigations and physical security.
Starting in January, Murray will train at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center at Glynco, GA. On completion of that training, he will enter on duty aboard the NCIS field office in Hawaii.
Murray has recommended that the Cache County Council appoint Chief Civil Deputy Attorney Taylor Sorensen as his replacement as interim county attorney until that post is permanently filled by the general election in November of 2024.
“I know that many will think I am crazy for walking away from a legal career and the lifestyle that it offers,” Murray added. “But this decision is about service and family, not money.”
He began taking terminal leave on Dec. 18 and will resign effective Jan. 9, 2024.
