LOGAN — The criminal case against a 44-year-old commercial airline pilot from Providence has been dropped after prosecutors reported evidentiary concerns and an uncooperative victim. Colby Darrell Jones originally faced multiple felony kidnapping and assault charges after law enforcement said he violently attacked and strangled his former partner while she slept.
According to court records, Jones appeared Aug. 10 in Logan’s 1st District Court for a preliminary hearing. The charges stemmed from a domestic incident that allegedly occurred during the early hours of Feb. 2. The victim reported to Cache County Sheriff’s deputies that Jones strangled her in her sleep and threw her off a bed, causing significant head trauma. She told investigators she later awoke on a couch in a separate room with limited memory of the exact sequence of events. Paralyzed by fear, she remained inside the residence for several hours before a friend eventually convinced her to flee to safety.
Instead of presenting evidence in the case, Cache County deputy attorney Andrew Crane asked First District Court Judge Spencer Walsh to dismiss the charges.
According to court filings, prosecutors determined there is currently insufficient evidence to proceed with the charges after the alleged victim stopped cooperating with law enforcement.
Because the case is being dismissed without prejudice, state prosecutors retain the option to refile charges against Jones at a future date should additional evidence or information become available.
