CACHE COUNTY – Starting immediately, some roads accessing local canyons will be closed to motorized and mechanized vehicle traffic, according to officials of the Cache County Public Works Department.

Those seasonal winter gate closures will be in effect until April 15, 2024, in accordance with County Resolution 2023-21, they say.

These closures are intended to protect public safety, reduce maintenance costs, maintain water quality and prevent erosion during snowy and icy conditions.

Specifically, the county announced winter gate closures for the following roads:

  • 3200 West (Old Canyon Road and 8500 South) – This road provides access from Old Canyon Road to Mount Pisgah Road. The gate closure will be at the north end of Old Canyon Road.
  • Birch Canyon Lower Road – This road provides access to Birch Canyon. The gate closure will be at the bottom gate. Additional gates located higher in the canyon will be closed by the U.S. Forest Service and private owners.
  • Gnehm Road (3400 North) – Public works officials explain that this is a gravel road that starts in North Logan at 1600 East and 3400 North, loops up to the base of the mountains and then turns into Hyde Park Canyon. The area affected by the winter gate closure is a small portion of the road in the middle of the loop.
  • High Creek Canyon Road – This road provides access to High Creek Canyon. The gate closure will be at the bottom of High Creek Canyon near 12900 East where the gravel road begins. Additional gates located higher up in the canyon will be also closed by the Forest Service.
  • Ivan’s Hollow Road – This road is a short section of gravel located northeast of Richmond. The winter gate closures will be at the bottom near High Creek Road and at the top near Upper High Creek Road.
  • Mount Pisgah Road – This road runs from US 89/91 near Sardine Summit east to Paradise. This road will be gated from the east side of the intersection of 2400 West and on the west side near US 89/91.
  • Short Divide Road – This road, which runs from Clarkston to the Box Elder County line, will be closed in both Cache and Box Elder counties. The gate closure in Cache County will be located at 9200 West, 9950 North at the Clarkston city limits.
  • Smithfield Dry Canyon Road – This road provides access to Smithfield Dry Canyon. The gate is located at the bottom of the canyon where the gravel road begins near the Smithfield city limits.
  • South Canyon Road – This road runs from Avon to the Weber County line. The gate on the Cache County side is located approximately two miles south of Avon.
  • 2200 South (Maple Bench) – This is the gravel road that runs from the intersection of 2200 South and 6400 West, ending at the Maple Bench/Cold Water Trailhead. The Road will be gated at the intersection of 2200 South and 6400 West.
  • East Canyon – This road runs from South Canyon Road to the east side of Porcupine Dam. The road will be gated at the west end of the dam and the closure extends to the east end of the dam where the Mineral Point/La Plata road begins.

Residents are also advised that the South Canyon Road closure will also affect other county roads including Three Mile Canyon, Flint Grove, Blue Bell Mine and Davenport roads.

These winter closures are in addition to the earlier seasonal closure of Three Mile Creek Road from Oct. 1 to June 15, 2024. This road is located west of Mendon at the end of 600 North.

Three Mile Creek Road was closed on Oct. 1 due to severe soil erosion and the need for excessive maintenance on the roadway.
