CACHE COUNTY – Balloting in the countywide municipal primary election held Aug. 12 has narrowed the field of hopefuls for the posts of Logan mayor and two at-large seats on the city council.

The survivors of primary balloting for mayor of Logan are incumbent council member Mark A. Anderson with 2,482 votes (66.4 percent of ballots cast by Logan voters) and newcomer Alanna Nafziger with 960 votes (25.68 percent of ballots cast).

Logan voters turned thumbs down on the candidacies of Jerritt T. Bodrero (106 votes for 2.84 percent), Lewis Roesberry (152 votes for 4.07 percent) and Matthew Paul Fatuesi (38 votes for 1.02 percent).

In the race for Logan Municipal Council seats, the four victors were incumbent council member Ernesto Lopez (1,761 votes for 26.38 percent), Brian Seamons (1,003 votes for 15.03 percent), Katie Lee-Koven (1,477 votes for 22.13 percent) and Melissa Dahle (1,426 votes for 21.36 percent).

Candidates who were eliminated by Logan voters included Gail B. Yost (519 votes for 7.78 percent), Joshua Michael Molitor (208 votes for 3.12 percent), Reilly Samuel Fatuesi (57 votes for .85 percent) and Kristi Fatuesi (224 votes for 3.36 percent).

Here in Cache County, only six communities  were required by state law to hold municipal primaries on Aug. 12 to winnow their fields of candidates for city council posts.

Those municipalities are Hyrum, Logan, North Logan, Richmond, Smithfield and Wellsville, according to County Clerk Bryson Behm.

Of a total of 50,388 voters in 72 precincts within those municipalities, Behm reported that 9,744  mail-in ballots were received by 8 p.m. on the primary day, for an unofficial voter turn-out of 19 percent.

In Hyrum, the positions in contention during the primary election were also for mayor and city council seats.

Incumbent Mayor Stephanie Miller (412 votes for 30.63 percent of ballots cast)) will face off against candidate Steve J. Miller (884 votes for 65.72 percent) in the municipal election in November.

Candidate Shara Toone ran a distant third in the mayoral race (49 votes for 3.64 percent).

Still in the running for two seats on the Hyrum City Council are Jared Clawson (370 votes for 14.37 percent), Nalyn Nelson (696 votes for 27.04 percent), Paul James (385 votes for 14.96 percent) and Rebecca Foulger (781 votes for 30.34 percent).

Hyrum voters chose to end the candidacies of Joshua Kyle Cannon (93 votes for 3.61 percent) and Kevin J. Peterson (249 votes for 9.67 percent).

In North Logan, candidates competing for two seats on the city council in November will be Tim McCabe (291 votes for 16.70 percent), Emily Schmidt (597 votes for 34.25 percent), Kirk K. Larsen (247 votes for 14.17 percent) and Larry N. Hepworth (378 votes for 21.69 percent).

Holly A. Gunther was narrowly eliminated by North Logan voters (230 votes for 13.2 percent).

In Richmond, where only one seat on the city council was up for grabs, primary voters chose Kayleen Bell (105 votes for 32.61 percent) and Fran Schumann (129 votes for 40.06 percent).

Not selected was Chase Westwood (88 votes for 27.33 percent).

Primary balloting also narrowed the field of candidates in Smithfield, where two seats on the city council were in contention. Voters there selected Chris Olsen (724 votes for 28.75 percent), Lizette Villegas (259 votes for 10.29 percent), Sue Hyer (692 votes for 27.48 percent) and Jay D. Downs (740 for 29.39 percent).

Smithfield voters turned thumbs down on the candidacy of Blaine Richard Nuttal (103 votes for 4.09 percent).

In Wellsville, where four candidates were in the running for the post of mayor, voters selected Carl P. Leatham (218 votes for 35.97 percent) and Chad Bankhead Lindley (174 votes for 28.71 percent) to compete in the November election.

Voters in Wellsville chose to end the candidacies of Kaylene Ames (134 votes for 22.11 percent) and Perry N. Maughan (80 votes for 13.20 percent).

All primary election results are considered unofficial until certified by Boards of Canvass meeting slated to begin on Aug. 19.
