MANTUA — A 64-year-old woman who was missing since July has been found alive near Mantua after enduring a harrowing journey, according to authorities.
The Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release, explaining how the Brigham City woman was reported missing July 26.
The woman told deputies she had crashed her car into a steep ravine in an area where no one could see her. She spent a total of five days at the bottom of the gorge before deciding she would need to find her own way out.
On or about Aug. 1, she began a nearly three-day journey traversing the steep incline and back to the roadway.
Box Elder deputies said she was discovered Wednesday night around 10:45 p.m. eight days after the crash reportedly occurred. She was on a road approximately one mile south of Mantua.
When she was discovered, she was suffering from dehydration and internal injuries, the sheriff’s office stated. It’s likely she sustained the injuries in the crash, but authorities haven’t confirmed what caused the trauma.
She was transported to the hospital, and the sheriff’s office said her condition is expected to improve.
Search and rescue crews had to rappel down the steep cliff to gain access to the crash site, authorities said.
Deputies didn’t disclose any details about what may have caused the woman to crash the car into the gorge. An investigation is continuing.
