A 21-year-old Brigham City man, Spencer Gerlach has been sentenced to between 15-years-to-life in the Utah State Prison for stabbing and killing his ex-wife earlier this year.
Court records show, Gerlach appeared in 1st District Court Wednesday for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to murder, a first-degree felony.
Gerlach told the court he took full responsibility for his actions and that his remorse for killing 19-year-old Keltsie Gerlach was immeasurable. He went onto apologize to his ex-wife’s family and friends saying he was compelled to carry the burden of their grief for the rest of his life.
Police arrested Gerlach April 15, after he called 911 saying he had just killed Keltsie. Officers responded to a Brigham City apartment at 691 South 600 East and found her dead from multiple stab wounds. A 15-month-old baby was also in the apartment asleep but was not in the same room where the crime occurred. Police said the couple didn’t have a history of domestic abuse but had recently separated during the past year.
In November Gerlach accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to murder. Under conditions of the agreement, a charge of committing domestic violence in the presence of a child, a third-degree felony, was dismissed.
