In a cooperative effort with the Mehdi Heravi Peace Institute at Utah State University, local residents who are interested in practicing courageous citizenship across the divide of politics are invited to participate in a workshop from 3 to 8:30 p.m. on the USU campus.
That workshop will feature David Lapp, a co-founder of Braver Angels, and Elizabeth Doll, the group’s national director of politics, in addition to state and regional leaders, including a member of Utah’s congressional delegation.
In addition to explaining the Braver Angels’ non-partisan mission, its organizers say the Utah State workshop will focus on identifying existing points of agreement across political differences on the critical issue of immigration.
Braver Angels is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, originally founded in 2016, that works to bridge the partisan divide in the United States, particularly between “Red” (conservative) and “Blue” (liberal) Americans.
They provide workshops, debates and skills training to help citizens engage in constructive, respectful conversations to reduce political polarization.
Founded by a 2022 donation from philanthropist and USU alumnus Mehdi Heravi, the Heravi Peace Institute empowers USU student, faculty and staff to cultivate the necessary character, knowledge and skills to constructively resolve conflicts and build peace.
Organizers say that attendance, include a dinner, at the Braver Angles workshop is completely free, thanks to generous support from the group’s donors. Since space at the event is limited, however, would-be participants should register in advance by going online to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/common-ground-workshop-on-immigration-dinner-provided-registration-1985055602744?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true#location
On that website, registrants will have the option of filing as a participant in the Mar. 28 workshop or an observer. Participants in the workshop will also be invited to a small-group, in-person, follow-up conversation of one of the members of Utah’s congressional delegation.
The mobile summit visit to Cache Valley will be the last stop on a Braver Angels swing through the Wasatch Front and northern Utah. Previous visits are scheduled to Lehi on Mar. 25, Provo on Mar. 26 and Orem on Mar. 27.
The Braver Angels workshop will be held in the Mehdi Heravi Global Teaching and Learning Center at 820 Old Main Hill on the USU campus
