LOGAN — An 18-year-old Logan man was arrested and faces nearly two dozen felony charges, including four counts of attempted aggravated murder, after police say he fired a gun 17 times at an occupied vehicle during a dispute over a lost cellphone in Logan on Saturday.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the suspect was identified as Amanii Aidai Garcia. He faces a total of 23 felony counts connected to the Saturday afternoon shooting near 1100 N. 400 West. The violent incident triggered a massive law enforcement response, a SWAT team deployment, and a temporary shelter-in-place order for nearby residents.
Logan City Police officers responded to the residential area just before 2 p.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a heated altercation and rapid gunfire. Upon arrival, police located four victims and discovered their vehicle had sustained significant visible damage from multiple bullet holes. Investigators confirmed that none of the four individuals inside the targeted vehicle was injured during the incident.
Witnesses told detectives the confrontation stemmed from a dispute over a missing cellphone. Garcia’s brother had reportedly found a phone belonging to one of the victims. When the victims arrived at the location to retrieve the device, they were confronted by Garcia and his mother, Sophia Garcia. During the escalating argument, witnesses reported seeing Amanii Garcia rack the slide of a firearm. As the victims attempted to drive away to safety, Garcia allegedly went outside and began shooting at their fleeing car.
According to charging documents, investigating officers analyzed neighborhood surveillance footage that captured video of Garcia firing 17 rounds at the vehicle. The firearm used in the incident has not yet been recovered by police.
The suspect’s mother, Sophia Garcia, was also taken into custody. She was arrested on suspicion of obstruction of justice after allegedly providing false information to detectives. She claimed she did not know her son’s whereabouts during the shooting and did not see who fired the weapon. However, police stated that witness accounts contradicted her claims, directly placing her alongside her son during the incident.
Following the shelter-in-place and SWAT response, Amanii Garcia was safely taken into custody and booked into the Cache County Jail. He is currently facing four counts of attempted aggravated murder, 17 counts of felony discharge of a firearm, one count of obstruction of justice, and one count of prohibited dangerous weapon conduct.
