BRIGHAM CITY – Keith Mecham was named the new Superintendent of Box Elder School District at a special meeting Thursday night.

He was the assistant superintendent of the district over secondary curriculum.

Marci Hatch, the secretary to the superintendent, said Mecham’s responsibility included overseeing 6,000 students at eight schools grades 6-12, supervised 7 principals and several assistant principals.

“He earned a Master of Education degree from Utah State University and an administrative license in Educational Leadership from Southern Utah University,” Hatch said. “He was the Box Elder Middle School principal for nearly 4 years.”

Mecham has been a teacher, a basketball coach and principal before going to the district as an HR assistant superintendent then to superintendent of curriculum.

“He will do a great job,” she said. “He is originally from Idaho then moved to Utah. He Earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Idaho State University, a Masters Degree from Utah State and has been here since then.”

The vacancy was created by the retirement of Steve Carlsen, who decided after 44 years in public education it was time to retire.

Carlsen served as Superintendent for the Box Elder School District for the past nine years.
