BOX ELDER COUNTY — The Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office deputy and K9 who were hospitalized following the shooting in Tremonton have been identified by officials.
Deputy Mike Allred was one of three officers who immediately responded to reports of a domestic disturbance at a home near 700 North and 200 East. He and his service dog, Azula, were both injured and hospitalized in the shooting.
Deputy Mike Allred, a five-year veteran of the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office, was described by the Department of Public Safety as a “natural leader who prioritizes the welfare of others over his own.” Allred and his K-9 partner, Azula, a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois, have worked together for the past two years. Azula is certified in both narcotics detection and tracking, and the sheriff’s office has called their partnership “exemplary.”
According to the Brigham City Police Department, moments after Tremonton Garland police officers, Sgt. Lee Sorensen and Ofc. Eric Estrada, were fatally shot by Ryan Michael Bate, Allred and Azula responded to the incident. They were both hit by gunfire, while still in their vehicle.
Allred was taken to a local hospital following the shooting, while his K-9 partner, Azula, was taken to a veterinary clinic. Allred has since been released and is recovering in fair condition. Azula remains at the veterinary clinic as a precaution.
“[Allred’s] actions during the incident in Tremonton exemplify his character and commitment to public service,” the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “His primary focus is always on the safety of his fellow officers and the communities he serves.”
The Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office said it was profoundly grateful for the overwhelming support from the community and the outpouring well-wishes and concern for both Deputy Allred and Azula.
