LOGAN — A 29-year-old Bountiful man has been sentenced to three months in jail for a string of car burglaries and thefts in Cache Valley last February. Wesley Sean Clark was ordered to report to the Cache County Jail by Jan. 9, after a judge called his actions “selfish and inconsiderate.”
Clark was sentenced Tuesday, Jan. 2, in Logan’s 1st District Court. He previously accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to theft, a second-degree felony; and burglary, a third-degree felony.
According to prosecutors, Cache County Sheriff’s deputies received several reports of vehicle burglaries on Feb. 19. The incidents had occurred in Hyrum, Nibley and Wellsville.
Investigators determined various items were taken, including a firearm, financial transaction cards and other property. A vehicle was also taken from the Nibley residence.
On Feb. 20, police in Salt Lake City responded to reports of a man suspiciously looking into parked cars. The suspect, later identified as Clark, was seen exiting a maroon vehicle with a backpack. When officers searched him, they located the stolen firearm and other valuables.
Police reported that Clark claimed he had borrowed the vehicle to go see his girlfriend who lives in Logan. Officers discovered that not only did he have property from the burglaries in Cache County, he also had stolen items from several other jurisdictions.
During Tuesday’s sentencing, defense attorney Kenneth Peterson said Clark had tried to mitigate the harm he had caused to the community 10 months ago. He noted how the defendant had also been seeking treatment for drugs and alcohol.
Clark expressed appreciation to the court for giving him a “second chance.” He said, he had “made a mistake and was willing to pay for it.”
Judge Spencer Walsh said the crimes affected a lot of people, leaving them feeling unsafe. He sentenced Clark to 90 days jail, with credit for 12 days previously served.
