LOGAN — Residents in south Logan and Nibley received an unexpected visitor Saturday as a young black bear traveled down from the mountains and wandered through neighborhood streets in Nibley and Logan.
Law enforcement officers and wildlife biologists tracked the bear with dogs as it ran through the Strata Apartment complex near the border of southern Logan and northern Nibley. The bear was eventually cornered and captured at a local dealership, Young Powersports.
The animal is a 2-year-old boar, according to Jim Christensen, northern region wildlife manager for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.
Christensen said wildlife officials plan to transport the bear to a DWR facility for a medical examination before attempting to relocate the animal.
Three bears have been spotted in the past week in Utah County.
Faith Jolley, a spokesperson for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, said drought conditions could drive Utah black bears into populated areas in search of food this year as dry weather severely shrinks their primary food supply. Plants and root vegetation make up roughly 90% of a black bear’s diet.
