LOGAN – It was her more than two decades of experience in water research and her work as a champion of water resources engineering and water data science that put Bethany Neilson in a position to accept the appointment as the new director of the Utah Water Research Lab at Utah State University.

She will assume the position July 1.

Utah State Water Research Laboratory.

David Jones, dean of USU’s Engineering College, said it is her understanding of Western water challenges that will ensure the lab continues to drive innovative solutions for water and environmental issues.

Water-related challenges have long been pressing in the Western U.S. and that is where her current research is focused. She has studied how groundwater influences river flow volumes, how underground water systems are connected and how data collection informs management decisions on water distribution in the Great Salt Lake basin.

During its more than 60 years, USU’s water research lab has been recognized as one of the most respected facilities of its kind.
