LAS VEGAS – Going more than six minutes without points to start a game doesn’t bode well.

Such was the case for the Utah State men’s basketball team Thursday and matters only got worse in a 73-39 loss to No. 8 San Diego State in the second round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament in Las Vegas.

“San Diego State just takes you out of everything you’re trying to do,” said USU head coach Stew Morrill. “At least they took us out of everything we were trying to do.”

SDSU shot 51.7 percent from the field in the first half en route to a 36-15 halftime lead and shot better than 83 percent during the first eight minutes of the second half in the lopsided win. The Aztecs also forced 14 turnovers and won the rebound battle 35-27.

Both teams emptied the bench with nearly 10 minutes left.

“You just can’t dig yourself a hole against an opponent like that,” said senior Jarred Shaw.

The Aztecs advanced to face UNLV on Friday, while the Aggies saw their season end with an 18-14 overall record, including 7-11 in their first season in the MWC.
