SODA SPRINGS, Idaho — A 27-year-old Arizona woman died and her brother was rescued after they fell through the ice while fishing on Alexander Reservoir on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded to the reservoir, located about 2 miles east of Soda Springs, around 2:50 p.m. Caribou County sheriff’s deputies arrived to find the siblings had broken through the ice approximately 200 feet from the northern shoreline.

First responders crossed the unstable ice — which was only about 4 inches thick — and managed to pull the 34-year-old man from the freezing water. However, authorities said the woman slipped beneath the surface as crews were working to rescue her brother.

A dive-certified deputy entered the water and located the woman. Both victims were transported to Caribou Medical Center, where the woman was pronounced dead. The man was treated and is expected to recover.

The Caribou County Sheriff’s Office extended its condolences to the family following the fatal accident. Multiple agencies assisted in the rescue effort, including Bear Lake County search and dive teams and an air rescue helicopter from Burley.
