SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Utah wildlife officials say the state’s annual deer rifle hunt had a successful opening weekend.

Saturday was the first day of the eight-day hunt, which is the state’s most popular.

About 60,000 Utah residents who received tags were expected to participate in the hunt.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports biologists with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources reported the southwest and south central areas of the state saw strong opening days with hunters not only capturing younger deer, which is typical, but older, mature animals as well.

Utah Division of Wildlife Resources spokesman Mark Hadley says deer inspected at tag check stations appeared healthy.

The hunt runs through Oct. 27.
