HYRUM – JBS Swift in Hyrum is making a new partnership with GreenGasUSA, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the production of renewable natural gas (RNG). The partnership, announced today, will bring RNG production to several JBS beef and Pilgrim’s poultry processing facilities across the U.S., including the Hyrum plant.
The project will involve capturing methane from wastewater streams at JBS facilities, purifying it into pipeline-quality RNG, and injecting it into regional gas pipelines. At the Hyrum facility, the partnership is expected to produce over 140,000 dekatherms of RNG annually, offsetting emissions equivalent to 19 million miles driven by a gasoline-powered vehicle.
The project builds upon JBS’s existing methane capture capabilities with a goal to maximize methane capture and RNG production.
“JBS is constantly working to increase sustainability, protect our environment, and improve our local community,” said Marvin Spidle Jr., JBS Hyrum General Manager, in a release. “This partnership is an exciting way to take that work a step further, by transforming biogas into Renewable Natural Gas that local businesses can use to reduce their emissions.”
In addition to Hyrum, the initial phase of the project will see installations at JBS’s Grand Island, Nebraska facility, and a Pilgrim’s plant in Sumter, South Carolina. All three sites are expected to be operational by the end of 2025.
This initiative is part of JBS USA’s broader sustainability efforts, which include more than 25 projects globally aimed at reducing methane emissions. According to JBS, these efforts have already cut greenhouse gas emissions by over 600,000 tonnes per year.
