LOGAN, Utah – Utah State men’s basketball junior Steven Ashworth and volleyball senior Tatum Stall were named the Male and Female Athlete of the Year, respectively, at the annual Robins Awards, recognizing the best of Utah State University.
Ashworth was named the United States Basketball Writers Association District VIII Player of the Year, as well as first-team all-district. He also earned first-team all-Mountain West honors and was to the Mountain West all-tournament team, along with being named second-team all-district by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Ashworth helped lead the Aggies to a second-place finish in the Mountain West, to the championship game of the Mountain West Tournament and an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament. He ranked sixth in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage, 15th in 3-pointers made per game, 26th in assist-to-turnover ratio and 30th in free throw percentage. He finished the season ranked on several single-season record lists, including 3-pointers attempted (256, 1st), 3-pointers made (111, 2nd), assist-to-turnover ratio (2.68, 6th), assists (158, 9th), points (567, 24th), minutes played (1,163, 10th) and free throw percentage (.878, t-10th).
Other nominees for Male Athlete of the Year included cross country junior Yonas Mogos, football senior Hunter Reynolds, golf junior Josh Pehrson, tennis senior David Cierny and track & field sophomore Brennan Benson.
Stall was named all-Mountain West, as well as to the all-Mountain West Tournament team, after leading the Aggies to their first-ever Mountain West Tournament title and first NCAA berth since the 2010 campaign. She ranked 10th in the Mountain West in kills per set (3.11) after logging a team-best 373 kills and was ninth in points per set (3.68). Her 38 service aces tied for 11th on the single-season record list.
Other nominees for Female Athlete of the Year included basketball senior Maria Carvalho, cross country sophomore Ana Weaver, gymnastics junior Brianna Brooks, soccer junior Alex Day, softball sophmore Claire Raley, tennis senior Zeynep Naz Ozturk and track & field senior Mica Rivera and.
Finalists for the Athlete of the Year were selected by members of the athletics department. A selection committee over these categories then selected the winners. The awards were just two of 16 honors extended by the University during the event, with students, faculty and staff all receiving recognition for their individual contributions to Utah State.
