Beyond the door, there’s peace, I’m sure And I know there will be no more Tears in heaven -Eric Clapton
Our loving father, grandfather and brother, Phillip Mayne, 67, of Brigham City, Utah, passed away at home on March 30, 2023, after a long battle with diabetes.
Phil was born in Pocatello, Idaho, on January 7, 1956, to Milo “Mike” George Mayne and Glenda Alice Parker. He was the first of two children.
Phil was raised in Granger, Utah, but the family later moved to Kearns where they lived at the Utah Youth Center. His junior year of high school, his family moved to Hibbard, Idaho where he attended Madison High. After graduating, the family ended up in Parker, Idaho to live with Phil’s maternal grandparents.
A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Phil served a mission as a young man in Brazil, where he learned Portuguese. Following his mission, he returned to Parker and caught the eye of his friend’s little sister and the two began dating.
On October 20, 1978, Phil and his sweetheart, Karen Irene Carlson, were married and sealed for time and eternity in the Idaho Falls, Idaho temple. They celebrated 44 years of marriage and together raised six children.
After their marriage, Phil attended college at the ISU Trade School learning to become an electrician, and later at Rick’s College, where he earned an Associate’s Degree in electronics. Then he began working as a Rocket Technician at Morton Thiokol, where he worked for many years. Later, he would go on to work in maintenance, retail, sales, finance and even substitute teaching, which he thoroughly enjoyed. When he wasn’t working, Phil loved playing the guitar–both acoustic and electric. Frequently, the latter could be heard all the way across the street rocking out to the Beach Boys, George Thorogood, Chuck Berry and Deep Purple. In quieter moments, he could be found reading novels or playing solitaire games on his computer.
A true hobbyist, Phil started a business called Mayne Hobbies to share his love of model cars and RC cars, planes and boats with his community. He could fix or “jury-rig” pretty much anything, not just the broken toys his children would bring him, but furniture, computers and other electronics, plumbing and sprinklers, cars and even people. He always provided a listening ear and gave the best advice. He made an impact on the people he met, becoming friends easily. He found opportunities to serve in his community, helping the less fortunate, volunteering with the Jaycees and Habitat for Humanity, dressing up like Santa Claus and holding many callings in the Church. He found some of his very best friends through the Home Teaching program.
His children will always remember Phil’s sense of humor and talent for lightening the mood. When his health permitted, Dad could be found in the middle of the action with all the kids, taking his turn singing, dancing, sledding, swimming and water-skiing right along with them. Mom often called him her “biggest kid.” Dad taught the importance of family, respect for God, and to be good citizens. He passed down a passion for music, computers, and RC cars. Through his example, they learned to be generous and selfless. All of his kids inherited his quick wit and perfectly executed sarcasm, much to Mom’s dismay.
Phil found great joy in being a grandfather, or “Grumpy” as his grandchildren lovingly called him–a nickname that extended beyond the bounds of family and became his moniker with all the neighborhood kids. He was so fond of the title, he would even introduce himself with a smile and add, “but you can call me Mr. Grumpy.”
Phil is survived by his dear wife: Karen; children: Martin Mayne (Sheila), Christina Tice (Douglas), Michael Mayne, Deanna Sproul (Andrew), Amanda Gardner (Joshua), and Mitchell Mayne (Alyssa); sister: Michelle Zink; and six grandchildren with two on the way.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Mike and Glenda Mayne; and brother-in-law: Neil Zink.
