BOX ELDER COUNTY — Two police officers were shot and killed in Tremonton on Sunday night while responding to a domestic disturbance call, according to authorities. A sheriff’s deputy and a police dog were also wounded and are hospitalized in fair condition.
The Brigham City Police Department confirmed the officers were met with gunfire upon their arrival and then stopped responding to their radios. The officers were responding to a disturbance when a suspect reportedly opened fire.
Bystanders reportedly persuaded the gunman to put down his weapon, and he was taken into custody. SWAT teams from Box Elder, Weber and Cache counties responded to clear the home and verify that there was no further threat, police said.
The gunman was arrested on charges of aggravated murder, police said in a news release. His name was not immediately released.
A shelter-in-place order for the area has been lifted, and the public is asked to avoid the scene as the investigation continues.
Tremonton Mayor Lyle Holmgren had previously posted a statement on X, which has since been deleted, saying the “community is deeply saddened by the tragic and senseless act of violence that claimed the lives of two brave Tremonton police officers and wounded a Box Elder County Sheriff’s deputy.”
The identities of the killed officers and wounded deputy have not been released, pending notification of family.
Mayor Holmgren’s message said, “This tragedy is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who serve and protect. We must unite — not in division, but in strength — to honor their sacrifice, support their families, and stand behind all who dedicate their lives to keeping us safe.”
