Search and rescue efforts are ongoing after a boat with more than a dozen passengers caught fire in San Francisco Bay near Alcatraz Island and then sank, according to local authorities. 

The San Francisco Fire Department said the call for the fire on the boat — a pleasure or pontoon-type boat — came in at 3:30 p.m. local time.

A total of 17 people were rescued from the water, and one person is still missing, the fire department said. Emergency crews were giving CPR to another person, authorities said. 

The U.S. Coast Guard said 19 people were aboard the boat and that search-and-rescue efforts are ongoing. 

Several local authorities and a private boat helped respond to the incident. 

Rescue swimmers and scuba divers were also deployed.
